Oddly enough there was no open shutter used on this shot when I took it oh so many years ago. Taken from the second story window of our tiny place on Scott St.

Candy Mountain
A fun one from a series I did shooting off the hip in the grocery store. No framing at all. The process was simply me walking around the store palm to eye piece with my thumb on the shutter; walking normally arms swinging and clicking in mass quantity. This was also a few years ago when 2.0 megapixels really meant something. The theory however was that digital could shoot in such quantity that if I just kept shooting without even looking I would find something half decent. In a way I was trying to bastardize the idea of the digital photograph, while at the same time trying to pull a page from the energetic physical connection that traditional abstract expressionism has to the process of creating art. Like I say this was a while ago.

Rethinking and reformatting . . . . I will get to the newer stuff later but for now I am posting some older things that I have had kicking around. I am noticing that there are a lot of down-turned faces in these. Enjoy.

2H Pencil. Some of that heavy shading and highlight that I love so much. I am going to try and post some more like these in the coming weeks.

Wellington Street Construction
Oil and Cold Zinc on Binderboard.

The first question is always, what is cold zinc? It is like an aerosol spray paint that we would use to cover fresh welds that had been cleaned with a wire brush; it is used to prevent rusting I believe for welds that will be exposed to rain or water for extensive periods of time. It is like galvanizing in a can. The effect of this metallic surface on the binder board is the cool crackled texture that you see.

If you look closely at this one you can see the surface is actually scored with an xacto knife and then pushed inwards to give it depth. Look closely at the eyes, the line of the jaw and the triangle on the shoulder. The cardboard is subtly bent inwards.

Just noting the date at the bottom, ten years ago. Man. Bic pen and a little pencil crayon; surrounded by that negative wash background which I can only attribute to Photoshop mayhem.

Explosion FX Test

Here is a classic that I found from a couple years back of an After Effects test.

The concept was simply the action of me tossing some form of exploding seeds or rocks into the snow, just using grapes for timing and contact reference. Credit to my dad as well on the camera button.

It's pretty fun to try and act like invisible explosions are happening beside you; and I think I made it more or less convincing. Imagination is a wonderful thing kids! Now go outside and play!

(I believe it's a little Martin Denny on the soundtrack as well, to keep it interesting.)

A quick flash animation based on the Kirk character design from Star Trek : The Animated Series. I think there were about three hand shapes here connected to two stiff arms. Supreme cheese; enjoy.

Lando Calrissian . . gets it on

This is a rough animation test with captured stills from the Return of the Jedi DVD. Just brainstorming on taking the basics of phonemes and applying it to digital painting in Photoshop. Easy tricks. Slap some cheesy held cel hand shapes on there and done.

The nice thing about this scene is that Lando stands relatively still so matching the mouth angle to the BG plate was easy. The quality has unfortunately degraded over time on YouTube. The eyebrows still make me laugh though.

And don't forget to stop by our concession stand for some Lando Brand Snacks sure to pack your mouth full of flavor . . .
